Have I stopped running? Well no, of course not, after my injury in May I struggled for a few months and having had a lot of treatment I wasn't really feeling much better. I still managed to run every week but sometimes it has only been once. Started going to a new physio about a month ago and making great progress. The exercises he gave me I am doing every day (nearly). This has made a huge difference and starting to feel fit again. I have also been doing a lot of cross training which hopefully will help improve overall fitness. 10.6km this morning along Prestwick beach. There is a huge amount of debris after the recent storms (affectionately christened "hurricane bawbag") it was surprisingly mild with a decent breeze. Easy pace of just over 9min miles and really good to get out and enjoy the run. So what next? Badminton Mon, Squash Tues, Gym Wed, maybe squeeze a run in Thurs. No, time to get a training plan in place for a half marathon. This always gets you focused on the goal. Keep running it is good for you. Rob the Roadrunner

So after 10 days of rest it was time to get out again. A very gentle 5km loop this morning. I still stopped a few times to stretch the calf muscles and this helped me to get round in just under 30 mins. It did feel a lot better so hopefully I will get out again later in the week. I feel I have bit off a bit much by committing to 1000 miles this year as I will have to do about 30 miles per week to the year end to achieve this. I'll give it a go anyway. Just pleased to get out and finish without any major problems. Keep running it only gets better Rob the Roadrunner

A few days later I began to suffer from severe back and leg pain and 5 weeks and 1 day later I have just been for a huge 2 mile run. My diagnosis from the doctor was "probable" sciatic nerve problems. Pain killers and anti-inflammatory medication prescribed. A few weeks of little change had me visiting a Physiotherapist which was an unusual experience which involved lots of bumping and twisting and bone manipulation. The findings were my head wasn't on straight(?) my neck had tension, one shoulder was lower than the other, my rib cage was misaligned, my hips weren't straight and one of my kidneys were strained. An hour long session left me a bit bruised but able to move a bit more freely and this has gradually improved over the past week so off I went for a run. After 50m I could tell that I still haven't recovered. After 500m I stopped and stretched which helped a little. It was really tough and felt like I was running on someone else's legs. My posture was completely different and I was sweating a lot, yes people normally sweat a lot when they run but this was more of a stressful sweat than an exertion sweat. After each km I stopped and stretched and managed a little over 3km in total at a pace of 9m 42s per mile. It feels like being a beginner again but at least I am back on the road and looking forward to my next attempt. Keep running Rob the Roadrunner

Wednesday was a 5km with my brother, his first 5km and a job well done. Friday was a 10km with work friends and it was a great day on a lovely course. All of them got under the hour which is a huge improvement since last week of over 2 mins. Today I was on my own and decided to push a bit on the long run. 3 x 5km with the middle 5km my fastest. Managed to average 25m 43sec for each 5km which I am very pleased about. Up to 156 miles for the year and starting to catch up to the mileage I need to get to 1000 this year. More focused again next week with intervals early week, 4 runs in total and a very long run on Saturday 14m+. Great weather this week and it is so much easier to run in the sunshine. First one was a 4 miler from the flat almost all off road, lovely. 2nd run was a 10km around Auchincruive with work fiends and the 3rd was another 10km today with Ronnie and Alan. Between us we have raced this 10km loads of times. Back in 2006 I completed it in 42mins! It is a tough we course with nearly 200m of climbing and usually a strong wind. It is actually 9.3km long so ideal for a pb. Alan wanted to get a new pb for this route so Ronnie and I supported him in his efforts. He set off at a good pace and maintained this on the uphill section over the first 3.5 miles. At the top of the route you can look forward to the last 2 miles being mainly downhill. The pace picked up (as fast as 7m33s at some points) and the race was completed in 47m 10s for the 9.3km. Anew pb for Alan by over 4 minutes from last year - amazing. I kept going until the 10km had been reached and achieved this in a respectable 50m 55s which is about 8m 11s per mile. A good testing run on a tough route to finish the week off. Troon 10km in 4weeks the next target to focus on. Not forgetting that I need to run 100+ miles per month for the rest of the year to meet my 1000 miles target! The first 5km was into the wind and finished with the biggest hill on the route so it was likely to be slow. 27mins 54 secs which is 8m 50s pace. The next 5km is mainly flat without much wind so should have been better. 27mins 41secs which is about 8m 45s pace. The last 5km is on a mixture of trails and roads with some downhill and the last stretch with wind at your back. However it is also getting harder as the time running is now over 1 hour. Pushed on and with wind at the back 26min 13secs which averaged 8m 25s pace. Challenge complete. Little mental tricks and targets can help to get through tough long runs and make you a better runner at the same time. If you are running alone then you can decide and set the pace and targets to suit yourself. Keep running Rob the Roadrunner

Yes I hate them but if you want to be a faster runner ....... Target was 5 x half km at about 2min pace. This was always going to be a bit of a stretch but you've got to have a target. 1 Km warm up then off first interval 2m 3s not too shabby. Half km easy then 2nd interval in 2m 2s, repeat 3rd interval 2m4s I can see a pattern emerging. 4th Interval into the wind 2m 5s and 5th interval in 2m 3s. Happy with this as pace was 6m 32s to 6m 42s for each interval. It was very hard and I hope it is the start a good season. Total miles for the year now 108 so a lot of catching up to do to meet the 1000 mile target this year. Bring it on. Keep running Rob the Roadrunner

So today, at last I had the chance to get our for a short quick run. It was very cold and windy so hat and gloves required. I was determined to do a time trial and push a bit on the 2nd mile so after a 1 mile warm up I upped the pace. Rather than go off like a loony I accelerated gently and pushed along about 90% getting a 3.22 half mile followed by another half mile at 3.23 so good pace throughout and a reasonable 6min 45sec for 1 mile. Can I go faster? Well it has been a tough week so yes I didn't give it everything and there is certainly another 15-30s to come off. Back to normal training now and a long run to look forward to on Sunday. Keep running Rob the Roadrunner

My leg feels okay when running, walking or even standing but is really painful when sitting! Anyway off we went this morning for a 7.5 miler in Troon. It was wet and rained for the full 7.5 miles but once you are warmed up it is quite pleasant. We even managed to push the last mile again. Nothing exciting to report. If you get the time come and join us on facebook and together we can run 1 million miles. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=263766331931 Keep running Rob the Roadrunner

As long as you aren't recovering from partying on Saturday night. Fortunately I wasn't so out before 9am and off on a 10 miler. I had company today in the form of Alan and Ronnie who kept me entertained for most of the run and time flew past.
My main new strategy I am applying to this years long runs is a fast finish. As soon as I have 1-2 miles to go I just push on. The idea is to get the body (and mind) to respond when it is tired. That way as you near the end of the race you have already convinced yourself you can keep going.
So steady pace of about 9m 10s per mile for the first 9 miles and then an increase in pace and finishing with 8m 6s last mile. Ideal and it felt good today.
My goals this year are to run 1000 miles and at the same time raise £1000 for combat stress. So if you're feeling generous please come and sponsor me for this very worthwhile cause.
45 miles down 955 to go.
